Soportujar Forest Park - Granada
A biologist's dream, this walk, which should ideally be split over 2 days, has a start point at the Padre Eterno Hermitage near Pampaneira at the south western end of the Alpujarra.
The walk which ranges from 1200 to 2000 metres need some special precautions in winter when severe blizzard conditions can occasionally be experienced causing safety issues.
The points of interest on route include a splendid portfolio of mixed tree species. In the Vivero de la Sombra, a nursery area for replenishment of woodlands you can find Maples, cork, oaks, holms, elms, cedars, Spanish firs and pines.
Then as altitude is gained the vegetation changes and the woodland become Chestnut, Pine, Holm Oak and Walnut. As further height is gained, the Puente Palo picnic area is set amongst fields of Scottish and Black Pines. On the route back down there are fields of Juniper and Laburnum.
